If you are looking for a winter activity but skiing and snowboarding isn’t for you, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are great winter alternatives. No matter your skill level, you can experience all that WNY has to offer in the colder months and at one of the abundance of places the region has to offer.
Located in Buffalo’s outer harbor, Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre wildlife refuge with 5 miles of trails and habitats to explore all year long. Traditional snowshoes and plastic children’s snowshoes are available to rent for $5 pair in the Education Center when there is at least 6 inches of snow. Trails are open all year round from dusk until dawn and are free to the public.
Situated on 633 acres of land, Knox Farm encompasses 400 acres of grasslands and 100 acres of woodlands to explore while cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Although they do not offer any rentals, the park is dog-friendly so they can enjoy the trails alongside you before you bring your four-legged friend to the 6-acre dog park. The park is free to the public and is open daily from dawn until dusk.
Enjoy a winter vacation just 35 minutes south of Buffalo at Bryncliff. During the winter, this resort, nestled in the hills of Varysburg, offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing among its variety of winter activities on 12 miles of groomed and lighted trails. Trails are open 9 to 5 Sunday through Wednesday and 9 to 9 Thursday through Saturday, with trails being lit for the evening hours. Equipment fees are age dependent and range from $13-25 with trail fees ranging from free to $22. Season pass and vacation packages are also available.
Located in Lewiston, Bond Lake Park is situated on over 551 acres of land for year-round use. The park offers a large skating rink and 13 miles of groomed cross-country skiing trails. You will have to bring your own skis, as rentals are not available. The park is open and free to the public.
Enjoy the scenery and variety of wildlife habitats on the Mohawk ski trail. Beginning at the visitor center on Casey Road in Basom, NY, the 7.5 mile trail loops around Mohawk Pond. It is open from sunrise through sunset until March 1. Feeder Road, Onondaga, and Kanyoo trails are open for the full season when snow conditions permit. Pets are allowed and must stay on a leash no longer than 10 feet. Rentals are not available and the Refuge is free for public use

The Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail (ECRT) has opened registration for the 2024 EA2EVL Fondo. Over the last three years this ride has raised $150,000 to continue to open, build, improve and maintain the 27-mile ECRT Trail that runs from Orchard Park to Ashford, NY. The trail association is making so much progress because of YOUR SUPPORT!
#1 - Date: This year, the 42-mile charity bike ride will be held on Saturday, October 5th.
#2 - Same Route: How could you forget! The fondo—or non-competitive bike ride—starts at 42 North Brewing in East Aurora and goes down Route 240, heading west on Rt 242 into Ellicottville.
#3 - Party On: EA2EVL ends with a celebration—music, food, drinks—at the Holiday Valley Resort.
#4 - Fundraising Awards: Your registration gets you into the event, access to our course and rest stop amenities.
